I’ve found myself frequently repeating the sentiment, “this year was a bit rough at times but the music got me through” a lot over the years. However, no year has truly demonstrated just how important music is to the human experience quite like 2020 has. Lots of death, grief, stress, and racial injustice have been dumped on top of our battered psyches this year. That’s before you even consider just how draining the global pandemic has been. Still, music prevails over all, serving as the soundtrack of the lost summer, our daily home-ridden monotony, and the ultimate comforter in times of distress. In appreciation of the small glimmers of good to come out of this brutal year, I gathered some writers/friends of mine to discuss 30 of the best songs of 2020. Before we dive into the list proper, here’s a small list of honorable mentions that were definitely worthy of a mention: Thundercat- “Dragonball Durag”, Beabadoobee- “Further Away”, Khurangbin & Leon Bridges- “Texas Sun”, Jay Electronica- “APIDTA”, Tony Shhnow- “Rush Hour”, The Weeknd- “Blinding Lights”, Brian Brown- “The Release Pt. 2”, Curren$y & Harry Fraud- “Gold & Chrome”, Dinner Party- “Freeze Tag”, Taylor Swift- “august”/“mirrorball”, and Phoebe Bridgers- “Kyoto.” For more amazing songs from 2020, here’s a playlist including the songs in this list (Apple Music/Spotify).
